The main specialization of SysDev Laboratories in data recovery is data retrieval in complicated logical data recovery cases.
Having a great experience in data analysis and recovery in quite complicated cases SysDev Laboratories could provide the Customers with efficient data recovery solutions.
Our main customers are data recovery companies; however SysDev Laboratories undertakes also data recovery tasks from organizations and individuals directly.
When our Logical Data Recovery service is helpful?
- Direct requests from organizations and individuals:
- Help with self-service recovery from NAS or SAN solutions;
- Valuable data recovery after deletion or data loss.
- For data recovery companies:
- Complex data damage cases (rebuilt RAID5 or RAID6, data fragments loss, file system metadata loss etc.);
- Possibly unknown file system (like VMware ESX Server VMFS, Apple Xsan etc.);
- Too old or too new RAID hardware with unknown data distribution algorithms;
- Specialized storages with custom file system editions (like Adaptec SnapServer (custom UFS), FalconStor (custom XFS) etc.);
- Just in case you feel customer is not satisfied with data recovery job.
How it works?
The first - feel free to contact us, identify yourself and briefly describe your case.
At this stage you may force acceptance of Non-Disclosure Agreement.
You may consider service place. Usually Logical Recovery jobs are made remotely. For this you need to have:
- Dedicated Windows computer with real external IP for access from Internet (as alternative - router rule to translate external IP/port to the service on specific dedicated computer);
- Dedicated user account with Administrator privileges;
- Enabled Remote Desktop Connection service for dedicated user account (alternative could be LogMeIn service managed by you);
- Analyzed storages connected to this dedicated computer.
You grant access to the system to our Expert and we doing the job analysis. The job price is quoted basing on job complexity.
After price negotiation we recovering the data and provide you with trial or even real result.
Only after successful recovery we preparing one-time Service Contract and invoicing you for the negotiated job price.

SPECIFIC SOFTWARE
Having the great base of software code that works in real commercial data recovery products, SysDev Laboratories can provide the customers fast with specialized data recovery software to complete the job in shortest terms.
Special software is required in cases of:
- Specific data damage, caused by failed RAID rebuilds;
- Specific RAID hardware with non-standard data distribution algorithms;
- Specific file systems or specific file system damage.
Our experts analyze fast the storage and suggest the best recovery strategy. SysDevSoftware engineers in shortest terms prepare software solution for specific data recovery job.
Real life examples:
- Failed Xsan (Xsan file system, RAID1 for metadata, 2 x RAID5 for storage).
Issue: metadata damage. Server was unable to mount the file system (the data was recovered with Lidyum Bilisim Teknolojileri Ltd.)
Solution: experts were able to find data distribution algorithm on Xsan with directory tree reconstruction. SysDevSoftware engineers created specialized utility for virtual file system reconstruction which was able to produce directory tree for each of Xsan storages. Directory tree was dumped as 'Recovery dump' for UFS Explorer.
- Failed XServer (HFS+ file system, RAID5);
Issue: wiped superblock and part of catalog file
Solution: manual dump of catalog file. Specific tool to rebuild directory tree from damaged catalog. Directory tree was dumped as 'Recovery dump' for UFS Explorer.
- Rebuilt RAID5 (NTFS file system);
Issue: System Administrator rebuilt RAID5 after single disk failure with different disks count and stripe size. Controller considered new array.
Solution: SysDevSoftware engineers created specialized tool for RAID de-striping using both old and new parity stripes.
- Old RAID with specific data distribution (NTFS file system);
Issue: server failed, however there were no software to pick the data from this specific RAID.
Solution: our experts was able to identify data distribution algorithm (as specific RAID1 and RAID3 hybrid) and SysDevSoftware engineers created specialized tool for RAID de-striping.
HARDWARE ADOPTATION
Specific hardware often requires non-standard solutions for data recovery. Vendors often make new storage solutions out of common standards and data recovery requires specific software or techniques for data recovery in case of storage failure.
SysDev Laboratories experts are able to help even in very complex data recovery tasks with storage analysis and SysDevSoftware engineers are able to make specialized software for such recoveries.
Even in cases when storage design is out of common standards - the data recovery is only the question of time.
Example:
- New ARECA RAID6 cards have own unique data distribution method (left-symmetric 'compacted parity') and unique algorithm for Q stripe.
Issue: controller failed to recognize RAID6 after 2 out of 8 disks failure. (the data was recovered with RAID Recovery Labs)
Solution: RAID de-striping required both P and Q stripes use. Q stripe has non-standard algorithm. Our experts identified left-symmetric 'compacted parity' and our math expert found right algorithm for Q stripe. Array was de-striped with 2 missing disks.
Having great experience in data storage organization analysis our experts could help in data recovery in most possible situations. The data must be only theoretically recoverable.
NON-STANDARD SOLUTIONS
Sometimes practical recovery tasks put many additional different constraints and 'classic' recovery strategies could not work. That's why our experts are ready to consider non-standard strategy or software solutions for each individual case.
Our mission is not only providing our customers with best result, but also to match additional requirements to time and quality.
Example:
- 500 terabyte cluster; over 200 individual RAID5 and RAID6; managed by Windows Server.
Issue: operator error caused deletion of near 300 TB data. (the data was recovered with DataTech Laboratories Inc.)
Constraints:
- Only few weeks for data recovery;
- No additional storage to copy data to;
- Cluster must work at least in read-only mode (shutdown is not possible).
Solution: our experts developed specialized technique and software tool for in-place data reconstruction.
Deep NTFS knowledge and special techniques (like taken from computer graphics 'Z-buffer' technique) guaranteed correct automatic data reconstruction.
The data reconstruction on each individual RAID ran 2-12 hours (however software ran on many RAID in parallel mode); downtime of individual RAID was few minutes (for data writing procedure). Recovery rate was over 99.9%.
